Metastable L1{sub 2} cubic phases in Al-Fe-Zr and Al-Ni-Zr
- Univ. of Idaho, Moscow, ID (United States). Inst. for Materials and Advanced Processes
Metastable L1{sub 2} cubic trialuminide intermetallic compounds based on Al{sub 3}Zr were synthesized by mechanical alloying by additions of 3 and 8 at.% Fe or Ni made to an Al-25at.%Zr elemental powder mixture. Mechanical alloying was conducted in a SPEX 8000 Mill mixer at room temperature. After milling for 8h, the cubic L1{sub 2} phases formed in all the alloys, as determined by X-ray diffraction. Formation of nano-sized crystals was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The Long-Range Order parameter of the L1{sub 2} phases and lattice parameters increased with increasing milling time. On heat treating the powder milled for 20h at 900 C for 1h, the metastable L1{sub 2} phase transformed into the equilibrium DO{sub 23} tetragonal structure.
