The Pit-9 Comprehensive Demonstration Project is intended to demonstrate the capability of existing technology to remediate a transuranic (TRU)-contaminated mixed waste disposal pit at the U.S. Department of Energy`s (DOE`s) Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) through a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act Interim Action. The pit-9 remediation has been contracted to a private industry subcontractor to perform the interim action cleanup. Pit 9 is are inactive waste disposal pit located in the north-eastern corner of the subsurface disposal area (SDA) at the INEL Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC). It covers {approximately} 0.4 hectare. The waste within pit 9 is primarily TRU waste generated at the Rocky Flats Plant (RFP) in Colorado and additional wastes, both hazardous and low-level radioactive, from generators at the INEL.
