Plasma Science: Enabling Technology, Sustainability, Security, and Exploration
- National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC (United States); National Academies of Sciences
The Plasma2020 decadal report took a forward-looking, interagency perspective on how the different elements that constitute plasma science provide a broad interdisciplinary driver for capitalizing on future opportunities in the scientific community. Goals of the study were to (1) provide a retrospective survey of the field of plasma science; (2) illustrate the vibrant connections that unify the field of plasma science; (3) offer a vision for future developments in plasma science, such as those related to organizational structure, program balance, and funding; (4) provide an assessment of the demographic characteristics and human resource development of the field, such as those related to workforce, educational, and other societal needs; and (5) make recommendations to balance the objectives of the field in a sustainable and healthy manner over the long term. The resulting report was composed in a style accessible to the non-scientist reader. With this approach, a broad audience can understand the importance of plasma science and what researchers in the field want to learn in the coming decades.
