Major layout- and design-determining factors for Swedish KBS-3 type repository for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel

Conference ·
OSTI ID:182969
The Swedish KBS-3 reference concept for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel features emplacement of the canister with the fuel, embedded in bentonite clay, in a hole bored from the floor of underground tunnels. The dimensions of the hole are determined by a set of factors which aim at long-term isolation of the fuel from the surrounding environment, but with due consideration to technical and economic conditions. The influencing factors are discussed and the resulting design measures presented. In addition the pattern for positioning the canisters in a horizontal plane are discussed and the resulting layout presented.
