Title: Seamless Cross-Technology Communication Platform for IoT Applications (Final Report)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:1822196

a. Description The ever-increasing Internet of Things (IoT) devices results in the implementation of multiple wireless technologies that would not only cater their data rate requirements but also support various applications. However, to optimize the energy efficiency and security of the wireless transmission, it is imperative to identify the wireless technologies in various IoT implementations. Many of the existing approaches are based on measuring receiving signal strength indicator. However, such approaches may not work well because of transmit power control and complex channel variations. We implemented an autonomous scheme that is based on spectrum measurement and machine learning processing to detect wireless technologies that co-exist in the same spectrum. b. Applications For smart home/building wireless/IoT communications, where a network consists of wireless devices using different wireless technologies that co-exist in the same spectrum, e.g., Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, LTE-Unlicensed, etc. CTC will advance smart infrastructure, smart city, and other applications. c. Advantages The research conducted during Phase II enables accurate detection of wireless technologies that co-exist in the same spectrum using only data from spectrum sensing. Existing solutions either provide inconsistent results or require extra data that may not be available in practice. d. Current State of Development Currently, the concept of the CTC has been theoretically analyzed based on Wi-Fi and ZigBee technologies through dataset collected from software-defined radio and Matlab based simulation. We also developed a hardware module that can transmit sensor data using three of the IoT communication technologies (WiFi, Zigbee and BLE). Further development is needed for a smart module that can utilize the CTC and also harvest its own energy.
