Radiation doses received in commercial air travel are considered important because of the large number of passengers carried, the long distances traveled, and the relatively high geomagnetic latitudes at which some flights occurred. The data of 1992 was selected for the study of the radiation dose originated from galactic and solar cosmic radiations that received by Taiwanese travelers flying in commercial aircrafts. Using all available data of cosmic radiation, the effective doses were calculated by using a computer program that combine the published galactic and solar cosmic ray ionization density and secondary neutron fluence data, aircraft speed, cruise altitude, flight profiles, and air travel statistics. Relative low doses and dose rates associated with air travel departed from and arrived to Taiwan for all Taiwanese travelers are concluded. The biological effect, if any, is extremely small. On the basis of the BEIR estimates, these doses might result in several serious disabilities per year in the total Taiwanese population of 21 millions. The increase in overall ill health due to genetically connected disease is estimated and can be ignored. This investigation assures the safety of even the high altitude, high geomagnetic latitude travel in commercial aircraft to and from Taiwan.
