Present status of nuclear development in Japan and international cooperation

In Japan, the Atomic Energy Basic Law was enacted in 1955 and has served as a guideline for Japan`s nuclear development ever since. This law specifies the objectives of nuclear development as follows: {open_quotes}It is aimed at securing energy resources for the future, facilitating the advancement of science and industry, and eventually, contributing to an improvement in the standards of human welfare and in the standard of living.{close_quotes} We would like to promote nuclear development strictly observing Japan`s basic policies, namely {open_quotes}limited to peaceful uses{close_quotes} and {open_quotes}ensuring safety{close_quotes}. This report describes the development and uses of nuclear power in Japan with a historical aspect and also nuclear energy for the 21st century. The utilization of isotopes and radiation, as well as international cooperation is discussed.
