An electrorheological (ER) fluid was prepared by mixing silicone oil with silica particles (<63 {mu}). Standard viscosimetry measurements show the expected change in viscosity with electric field. A simple optical setup was especially designed with two polarizers allowing to measure transparency vs. field, and to evaluate, in a straightforward way, the delay time of response of the fluid.
