One-electron oxidation of [(Py5Me2)RuII(N3)]+to [(Py5Me2)RuIII(N3)]2+switches on metallo-Staudinger reactivity towards PPh3, forming [(Py5Me2)RuII(N(H)PPh3)]2+through a putative [Ru–N=N=N–PPh3] intermediate.
