Cook Inlet Tidal Energy Resource Characterization Effort

Program Document ·
OSTI ID:1798079
Located in the southcentral region of Alaska, Cook Inlet contains one of the greatest tidal resources in the world. A pinch point in the channel increases the water velocity and provides an excellent site for a potential tidal farm. Access to affordable, clean power would provide a cascade of economic benefits to Alaskans, who face some of the highest energy costs and most extreme climates in the U.S. NREL researchers are collaborating with universities and private partners to gain a better understanding of the underwater environment to pave the way for development of an efficient, durable tidal farm. This summer, they will deploy a buoy in Cook Inlet to characterize the site.
