Spent fuel and vitrified high level radioactive waste (HLW) will be stored before disposal in dry environment inside transport casks. The paper describes the cask design principles and the design safety assessment requirements derived from the transport regulations and interim storage site licensing. The safety requirements for shipping casks are world-wide based on the IAEA-Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. A unique requirement of the regulations for ``Type B`` packages is that a sequence of mechanical and thermal tests has to be carried out (or to be assessed) to demonstrate the package`s ability to withstand severe accident conditions.
