Scottish Nuclear Limited (SNL) supplies about half of Scotland`s electricity from two Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (AGR) power stations. As part of plans to reduce operating costs, SNL proposes to store the spent fuel in site-based dry stores followed by direct disposal in an underground repository. To demonstrate the technical feasibility of this proposal, SNL commissioned an independent study of direct disposal of AGR fuel. The study comprised four tasks: characterization of AGR fuel as a waste form for disposal, design of suitable disposal containers and repositories, and a comparative safety assessment of repositories for disposal of AGR fuel and for vitrified reprocessing waste. This paper briefly describes the results of this study.
