Low/intermediate level waste package criteria in compliance with the requirements for transport and disposal

Conference ·
OSTI ID:178041
In the management of radioactive waste, different processes have to be considered like conditioning, interim storage and final disposal with transportation as the linking process. It is necessary to pay attention to all the relevant requirements of these processes for a safe and proper waste management. The main requirements for transport and disposal will be described and compared for typical waste shipments to the planned Konrad repository and to the operating Morsleben repository in Germany, considering waste form, radionuclide inventory and packaging. Resulting consequences for waste package limitations will be discussed. For transportation, some aspects of the LSA/SCO-regulations within Safety Series No. 6 -- Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material -- will be described, which are also the basis for the German transport regulations. They are mainly applied to shipments of low/intermediate level waste world wide.
