Radwaste management in Slovenia
- Agency for Radwaste Management, Ljubljana (Slovenia)
The paper presents the main activities of the Agency for Radwaste Management since its establishment in 1991 by the Slovene government. The main objective of the Agency for Radwaste Management is to prepare and organize all the activities concerning the planning, construction, operation and management of the final repository of radioactive wastes. The first siting project for surface low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW) repository was interrupted in its final phase due to the strong public opposition. As it was impossible to proceed with the investigations on these locations and to conclude the siting procedure the Agency for Radwaste Management started to investigate other options. The possibilities of the implementation of an underground LILW repository are currently studied. In parallel the projects concerning the public relations and education as well as some technical not site-related projects are in preparation. In this paper, a short overview of the Agency`s main activities and projects is given.
