  1. European Commission, Brussels (Belgium)
The European Commission is implementing R and D programs in the field of management and storage of radioactive waste. These programs are being carried out either under shared-cost contracts by national laboratories in the various Member States of the European Union or in the Joint Research Centers of the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). The Council of the European Union made a decision on 16 December 1994 concerning a new Community R and D program on Nuclear Fission Safety (1994--1998), including research on radioactive waste management and disposal. One of the main objectives of the activities to be carried out is to contribute to a further integration of the efforts undertaken by the Member States and the Community to develop the technical basis and a common understanding of the scientific issues of the disposal of long-lived radioactive waste, specifically spent fuel and vitrified high-level waste. The need to establish the scientific basis for guidelines for waste management practices, where necessary from review of past work, is also recognized.
