Evaluation of stream chemistry and watershed characteristics in the Appalachian Plateau and Blue Ridge regions of Maryland

The purpose of this study was to examine the stream chemistry data from the Maryland Synoptic Stream Chemistry Survey (MSSCS) from the Appalachian Plateau and Blue Ridge regions in an attempt to identify those factors regulating acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) in the streams of these regions. The MSSCS data indicated a wide range in stream ANC in these two regions, from acidic (ANC < 0 micro-eq/L) to highly alkaline (ANC > 1000 micro-eq/L) streams. The widespread spatial variation in bedrock geology in the Appalachian Plateau and Blue Ridge regions is primarily responsible for this degree of spatial variability in stream ANC in these regions. Secondary effects due to land use on stream ANC were found in the Blue Ridge. Atmospheric deposition appears to be the primary regional source of acidity in the streams of western Maryland.
