Local thin areas in pressure vessels, storage tanks, and piping results from erosion, corrosion, or blend grinding to remove flaws. Several recent papers have described approaches to evaluate these thinned areas to determine if they could remain in the structure without compromising overall structural integrity. These assessment methodologies were based on the results of parametric studies using elastic/plastic finite element analysis (FEA). The Materials Properties Council sponsored physical testing of two pressure vessels which had been retired from service to provide validation of the FEA results. The vessels were first inspected to locate local thin areas or cracks which had occurred in service. Additional thin areas, sized to have a Remaining Strength Factor (RSF) of 0.8 according to the assessment methodology, were then ground into the vessels. Each area was monitored with strain gages as the vessels were loaded to a pressure in excess of four times the design pressure. The pressure vs. strain data from these tests were used to validate the finite element results. For this paper, several thin areas have been selected as examples and the finite element results are compared to the actual test data. Other general conclusions have also been developed based on the test results.
