Fitness for service and reliability of stationary equipment are conjointly addressed by the application of fracture mechanics to equipment containing cracks. Two methods of assessing these factors are examined. The British Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB), UK, R6 method is described and compared to a method of Operating Stress Mapping developed from Irwin`s original American work. The differences between the two approaches are demonstrated by applying these techniques to the problem of assessing the reliability of a plate containing a crack.
