Inspection of application and installation of reinforced tank liners

Reinforced tank lining systems are used to protect tank bottoms from top side corrosion as well as protection against leakage. Due to hazardous conditions, before application begins the tank must be drained, opened, properly cleaned of all sludge and debris and rendered gas free. All proper lock out, tag out and confined space procedures must be strictly followed. Once safe entry is confirmed the tank should then be preblasted so a thorough inspection of the substrate can be conducted. Ultrasonic testing can identify thin areas of the substrate caused by bottom side corrosion that may require additional reinforcement. After all repairs to the surface area have been completed all rough edges/burrs or sharp angles should be ground smooth as well as removal of any weld spatter or buck shot. The application of the reinforced laminate system is a five (5) step process: (1) abrasive blasting; (2) application of primer coat over the entire floor area and 18--30 inch up the side walls; (3) catalyzed putty application; (4) resin/mat application; and (5) gel coat application. These five steps are described further.
