Ever since the inception of bulk liquid storage tanks those responsible for the integrity of these structures have been looking for an efficient and cost effective method of inspecting the underfloor condition of the floor plates. This being the only part of the tank that cannot be visibly inspected during the normal tank outage operations. A detailed description of the F.I.T. (Floor Inspection Tool) system operated by Tuboscope Vetco International is described. The scanner uses an active electro-magnet which is used to saturate an area of the floor plate. Any corrosion, top or bottom side, causes a disturbance of the magnetic flux in the material and results in the creation of a flux leakage at the top surface of the plate.
