Multipath ultrasonic gas flow meters for underground storage applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:176035

An ultrasonic gas flow meter has been installed at Oklahoma Natural Gas` Osage Storage Station to measure storage insertion and withdrawal. Ultrasonic flow meters are well suited for storage applications because they are bi-directional, cause no pressure drop, and have a large measurement range. In this application the ultrasonic meter is being used as a check meter for two pairs of turbine meters, one pair for measurement in each direction. Over the course of several months, the ultrasonic meter has been compared with the turbine meters to determine the feasibility of using a single meter in place of two separate meter runs. Since its commissioning in early March, the ultrasonic flow meter has recorded a total flow volume within 1% of the turbine meter values, without flow calibration.
