DOE`s Y-12 Plant eases into Post-Cold War role

For more than four decades, a veil of secrecy-and impenetrable security fences-surrounded the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which is now managed by Lockheed Martin under a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy. But times are changing, according to D.H. Johnson, former director of technology transfer at the Y-12 plant. {open_quotes}Since the end of the Cold War, the plant has sought{hor_ellipsis}new missions that enhance the development of the civilian economy.{close_quotes} A key component of Y-12`s strategy consists of enlisting the support of the state and local community. {open_quotes}In launching its defense-conversion plan, DOE sought support from both the state of Tennessee and the local Oak Ridge community,{close_quotes} he says.
