This paper describes the representation of geothermal electricity supply in the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) being developed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). During 1993 and 1994, we designed and created the Geothermal Electric Submodule (GES) of the NEMS. which we are refining during the spring/summer of 1995. The GES simulates the development of U.S. hydrothermal resources and calculates capital and operating costs based on the reservoir characteristics of individual resource sites. As a component of the Renewable Fuels Module (RFM) of the NEMS, the GES interacts primarily with the Electricity Market Module (EMM), one of two conversion modules of the NEMS. Overviews of the NEMS, RFM, and EMM are presented first, followed by a more detailed description of the GES and its relationships with the RFM and the EMM.
