Reactively-infiltrated silicon carbide composites are prepared in the SiC-Al-Si and SiC-Cu-Si systems by using Al-Si and Cu-Si alloys to infiltrate porous carbon preforms. The design process of such materials and control of phase composition is presented and illustrated with microstructural observations. Net-shape processing capabilities and simultaneous joining and reaction are demonstrated.
