Organic chromophores were incorporated in the sol-gel derived silica glass and their electrical polarizability, thermal and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were measured. Our synthetic approach was twofold: (1) synthesize the silica sol incorporated with NLO material (2) orient the NLO moiety by subjecting thin film to an electric field during sol to gel transformation. Thermal analysis showed that the decomposition temperatures of disperse red-1 and 4-nitro-2-methylaniline shifted to higher temperatures when they are incorporated in silica film. Optical analysis showed that the corona discharge poling enhanced the second harmonic generation (SHG) of the 4-nitro-2-methylaniline.
