Sol-gel electrochromic coatings

The preparation and properties of sol-gel electrochromic coating materials which have been studied and proposed in the last few years for the fabrication of smart devices are first reviewed. Then the preparation, the structural, optical and electrochemical properties of sol-gel Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} coating are presented. This material exhibits a blue coloration under Li{sup +} insertion with reversible variation of the optical transmission in the visible and near infrared range between 80% and 20% and a high chemical stability (tested up to 2000 cycles). These films are therefore very promising to be used in electrochromic devices.
