{sup 17}O solution NMR using enriched water has been used to investigate co-condensation reactions between various alkoxides in selected sol-gel preparations. The chemical homogeneity of the final material is closely related to the formation of these co-condensed species. Resonance peaks due to co-condensed species between dimethyldiethoxysilane, methyltriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane have been clearly identified. Reactions between silicon alkoxides and titanium or zirconium alkoxides have also been studied and formation of Si-O-Ti and Si-O-Zr clearly shown.
