The intersection of crack arrays with surfaces results in various patterns of lines. Compared to point defects or dislocations patterns, the organization of cracks is much more difficult to investigate both experimentally and theoretically. A simulation of crack patterning in agreement with the theory of elasticity and taking into account materials characteristics would be a precious tool but it is a huge task. Accurate numerical methods to calculate the stress field of a crack within an array are too time consuming to handle several hundreds of cracks in a dynamical simulation. Then it is necessary to limit the description of cracks to their fundamental features. To achieve this condition, it is proposed to apply the classical description of cracks in terms of pile-ups of virtual dislocations. A simplified 2D simulation is presented to illustrate the application of this method to a population of cracks.
