A test for measuring failure and fragmentation properties of matter under intense loading conditions
- Sandia National Lab., Albuquerque, NM (United States)
A new material property experiment is being developed to determine the conditions to failure and fragmentation resistance of materials under intense impact or explosive loading conditions. The method uses controlled impact loading and flash radiography techniques to assess states of deformation and fragmentation. Analytic methods are being developed to extract critical strain and energy-to-failure properties, along with material fragmentation resistance or toughness. New data have been obtained for several steels, copper, aluminum and tantalum. Additionally, high-obliquity impact penetration and fragmentation experiments on metals are being performed to guide computational model development. Failure and fragmentation statistics are assessed from the experiments. The material property test method and validation experiments are complementary in providing material property data and benchmarking results to verify models and computational simulations.
