A model of thermoviscoelasticity is presented for application to polymeric solids in the so-called transition zone between rubberlike and grasslike behavior. The model is constructed using the concepts of {open_quotes}thermorheologically simple{close_quotes} material behavior and {open_quotes}thermoviscoelastic materials of the single-integral type{close_quotes}. Observed thermoviscoelastic effects in polymers in transition are discussed, and it is shown how these can be predicted by selecting suitable forms of free-energy function.
