The Office of Nuclear Incident Policy and Cooperation and the Office of Nuclear Security Deterrence and Detection at the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration provide a multi-phased approach for detection systems and measures for nuclear and other radioactive material out of regulatory control in cargo shipments. The approach is designed using best practices to deter, detect, interdict, characterize, adjudicate, and recover illicit radiation sources. Two case studies will be presented which demonstrate the multi-phased approach to nuclear security.
