MgCrPt2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two MgCrPt2 ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. Mg2+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Pt2- atoms. Both Mg–Pt bond lengths are 2.51 Å. Cr2+ is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Pt2- atoms. Both Cr–Pt bond lengths are 2.26 Å. Pt2- is bonded in a linear geometry to one Mg2+ and one Cr2+ atom.
