SmPtSb is half-Heusler structured and crystallizes in the cubic F-43m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Sm3+ is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to four equivalent Pt2- and four equivalent Sb1- atoms. All Sm–Pt bond lengths are 3.01 Å. All Sm–Sb bond lengths are 3.01 Å. Pt2- is bonded to four equivalent Sm3+ atoms to form PtSm4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent SbSm4 tetrahedra, corners with twelve equivalent PtSm4 tetrahedra, and edges with six equivalent SbSm4 tetrahedra. Sb1- is bonded to four equivalent Sm3+ atoms to form SbSm4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent PtSm4 tetrahedra, corners with twelve equivalent SbSm4 tetrahedra, and edges with six equivalent PtSm4 tetrahedra.
