Nuclear dependence of the EMC effect and the extraction of the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions

The {ital A}-dependence of nuclear deep inelastic structure functions, {ital F}{sup {ital A}}{sub 2}({ital x}), is investigated within the Relativistic Impulse Approximation (RIA). By expanding to first order in the perpendicular momentum squared, {ital k}{sup 2}{sub {perpendicular}}, of the bound nucleons, we are able to fully understand the behavior of {ital F}{sup {ital A}}{sub 2}({ital x}) for {ital x}{gt}0.5. The {ital A}-dependence of nuclear structure functions which emerges from this analysis is used to extract the ratio of the neutron to proton structure functions, {ital R}({ital x})={ital F}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2}({ital x})/{ital F}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2}({ital x}) at {ital x}{r_arrow}1, from data on both deuteron and complex nuclei. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
