Ru2ZnGe crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two Ru2ZnGe ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. Ru is bonded in a linear geometry to one Zn and one Ge atom. The Ru–Zn bond length is 2.57 Å. The Ru–Ge bond length is 2.29 Å. Zn is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Ru atoms. Ge is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Ru atoms.
