SnS crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one SnS sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Sn2+ is bonded to five equivalent S2- atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing SnS5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Sn–S bond distances ranging from 2.58–2.95 Å. S2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to five equivalent Sn2+ atoms.
