Effects of magnetic tapering and tapered tubes on long-pulse, intense e-beam Gyro-BWO microwave emission
- Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (United States)
The authors summarize the results of a research program to determine the effects of magnetic and tube tapering on the microwave power, pulselength, energy, and frequency spectrum of an intense e-beam gyrotron-backward-wave-oscillator. The electron beam driver is the Michigan Electron Long Beam Accelerator (MELBA). Results show peak microwave power of {approximately} 6.5 MW extracted, {approximately} 60 MW internal tube power. Improvements in total extracted energy have been experimentally measured. Effects on the frequency spectra from the combinations of field and tube tapering will also be presented. Measured frequencies are in the range from 4.8 to 5.2 GHz in the TE{sub 11} mode fundamental. MAGIC Code simulations have been run for the GYRO-BWO with a scaled TE{sub 01} mode to model various magnetic and radial tapering combinations.
