The Port Washington Landfill is on the eastern portion of Manhasset Neck which borders Hempstead Harbor, Nassau County, New York. On-site and off-site contamination of groundwater and soil gas has been attributed to a section of this municipal landfill called L4. Principal contaminants are volatile organic compounds (gasoline components, dry-cleaning fluids, solvents) from industrial waste disposal at the site. Based on the information reviewed, the Port Washington Landfill represented a public health hazard because of past exposures to site-related contamination in soil gas, groundwater and ambient air.
