Title: Results on nucleon structure functions from polarized and unpolarized deep inelastic muon scattering experiments at CERN

Data are presented on the spin-dependent structure function of the proton, {ital g}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}, measured in inclusive polarized muon scattering. The first moment of {ital g}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}({ital x}) is compared with that of earlier experiments and with the Ellis-Jaffe prediction. Also semi-inclusive data are shown, where charged hadrons provide information on spin-flavor correlations. In the context of the quark-parton model the data indicate that quark spins contribute a small fraction to the nucleon spin. All published data of {ital g}{sub 1} in combination confirm the Bjorken sum rule at the 10 percent accuracy level. In a QCD analysis of {ital F}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2} and {ital F}{sup {ital d}}{sub 2}, measured with high precision down to small {ital x} by NMC, the gluon distribution is determined. The {ital F}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2}/{ital F}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2} data are reanalyzed and the Gottfried sum {integral}{sup 1}{sub 0}[{ital F}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2}({ital x}){minus}{ital F}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2}({ital x})]/{ital x} {ital dx} is evaluated.
