Heavy flavor production---for instance of antibaryons and strange particles---which is dynamically suppressed in elementary {ital pp} reactions may give clues about the nature of the hot, dense system which is produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions. Here we discuss two collective production mechanisms, the formation of strong chromoelectric fields (``color ropes``) and preequilibrium processes in hadronic resonance matter. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
