An average figure of merit value of {ital Z}{similar_to}10{sup {minus}3}/K was achieved for CoSb{sub 3} substituted by Pd (3%) over the wide temperature range 300--800 K. Samples of (Pd{sub {ital x}}Co{sub 1{minus}{ital x}})Sb{sub 3} compounds, 0{lt}{ital x}{lt}0.05, were prepared by hot-pressing the milled powders and by subsequent annealing in inert gas. Measurements of the electrical and thermal transport properties were made on the samples at temperatures ranging from 300 K to 800 K. It was found that the conduction type was {ital n}-type and the electron mobility as high as {mu}{sub {ital e}}{similar_to}100 cm{sup 2}/Vs was obtained for a (Pd{sub 0.03}Co{sub 0.97})Sb{sub 3} sample. The high value of the mobility can be related to the skutterudite structure that the valence band is only formed by {ital p}-{ital p} bonds between adjacent Sb-atoms. The doping of Pd into CoSb{sub 3} causes the type conversion from {ital p}-type to {ital n}-type, and results in a good Seebeck coefficient of {ital S}{similar_to}{minus}0.3 mV/K, electrical conductivity {sigma}{similar_to}3{times}10{sup 2} {Omega}{sup {minus}1} cm{sup {minus}1}, and low thermal conductivity {kappa}{similar_to}0.025 W/cm K at room temperature. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
