Lanthanide vanadium bronzes Ln{sub x}V{sub 2}O{sub 5} are of interest as new materials for producing ionometric electrodes sensitive to the corresponding constituent rare-earth ions present in solution. Synthesis of these materials is, however, fairly complex and laborious. First attempts at preparing these bronzes (namely, La{sub x}V{sub 2}O{sub 5}) involved treatment conventionally used in the synthesis of vanadium bronzes: high-temperature annealing (1020 K, 24 h) of a mixture of La{sub 2}O{sub 3}, VO and V{sub 2}O{sub 5} powders in evacuated quartz tubes. Later, however, this preparation procedure was reported to yield a three-phase product containing a rare-earth orthovanadate and two vanadium oxides. Only upon annealing at high pressure (7.7-9.0 GPa), was this mixture converted to a hexagonal bronze. Here, the authors report an attempt at preparing lanthanum vanadium bronze by magnetron sputtering in an inert atmosphere from starting reagents commonly used in the synthesis of this bronze.
