Inorganic phosphate glasses feature better properties and easier preparation techniques than the existing crystal scintillators; their practical application is, however, limited owing to their low scintillation efficiency upon excitation with X-rays. In all of the matrices studied (phosphate, silicate, borate, and germanate glasses), Ce{sup 3+} luminesces, whereas tetravalent cerium causes strong quenching of luminescence. Fedorushkov studied metaphosphate glasses R(PO{sub 3}){sub 3}(R=La, Y, Ga, Al, Ce) and M(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}(M=Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Sr). The amplitude and total luminescence intensities were found to increase with increasing content of cerium, and no concentration quenching of Ce{sup 3+} luminescence was observed. The luminescence of Ce{sup 3+} excited in the ultraviolet and visible regions was studied. In this work, the authors studied the luminescence of cerium in the (Ce, Ln) ultraphosphate glasses (UPGs) excited by the pulses of fast electrons as a function of cerium content, glass composition, and preparation conditions. The interaction of cerium-containing glasses with pulsed ionizing radiation of high energy has not as yet been studied.
