Refinement of the Y-Ni-B equilibrium phase diagram

In earlier studies of the Y-Ni-B phase diagram at 973 K, compositions of the 11 ternary borides found in this system were determined, for the most part, only approximately. Comprehensive structure determination allowed the refinementfor the compositions of five compounds: {approximately}YNi{sub 5}B {r_arrow} Y{sub 3}Ni{sub 13}B{sub 2}, {approximately}Y{sub 2}Ni{sub 3}B{r_arrow} Y{sub 3}Ni{sub 7}B{sub 2}, {approximately}YNi{sub 8}B{sub 3}{r_arrow}YNi{sub 12}B{sub 6}, {approximately}YNi{sub 3}B{sub 2} {r_arrow} Y{sub 2}Ni{sub 3}B{sub 6}, and {approximately}YNi{sub 4}B{sub 7} {r_arrow}YNiB{sub 4}. Two polymorphs of the boride YNi{sub 12}B{sub 6} (with the CeNi{sub 12}B{sub 6} and SrNi{sub 12}B{sub 6} structures) were identified, the former existing at higher boron contents. A new boride, Y{sub 4}NiB{sub 13}, which was not found in earlier studies of the Y-Ni-B equilibrium phase diagram, was identified. These findings made it possible to reexamine the Y-Ni-B phase diagram. Further structural studies revealed the existence of Y{sub 2}Ni{sub 15}B{sub 9}, Y{sub 2}Ni{sub 15}B{sub 6}, Y{sub 3}Ni{sub 19}B{sub 10}, YNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}, and Y{sub 2}Ni{sub 10}B{sub 5}. These compounds did not all appear in the Y-Ni-B phase diagrams constructed. This led the authors to undertake an additional experimental investigation of the Y-Ni-B system in order to refine its equilibrium phase diagram, primarily in the region 0-40 at. %Y and 10-60 at. % B. In studying this system, the authors took into account data reported earlier on the binary systems (Y, Ni)-B and Y-Ni.
