Leachate quality can be used as an indicator of the degree of stabilization within a landfill. Long-term leachate quality data from 13 municipal solid waste landfills, some of which have practiced co-disposal of hazardous wastes, are compiled and analyzed. The parameters summarized are indicators of decomposition and include BOD, COD, total dissolved solids, conductivity, pH, hardness, chloride, sodium, iron, cadmium, and VOCs. In general, leachate constituent concentrations tended to rise during landfill operation, reaching peak values approximately at closure, followed by a gradual decrease post-closure. More dramatic decreases for BOD, COD, hardness, iron and cadmium, and pH increases, were associated with the transition from acid anaerobic to methanogenic-dominated decomposition, which generally occurred approximately four years after closure.
