Molten salt reactors and pyroprocessing are growing areas of interest due to the many benefits they offer. However, the chemical behavior of actinides, fission products, and corrosion products is not well understood within the molten salt environment. This includes redox behavior, corrosion effects and rates, and speciation dependencies on temperature and salt melt composition. On-line monitoring paired with spectroelectrochemistry allows for a powerful route to characterize these systems in situ. On-line monitoring utilizing optical spectroscopy allows for the fast and robust identification and quantification of many actinides, fission products, and corrosion products. Here we demonstrate the application of spectroelectrochemistry and on-line monitoring to the characterization of chloride based salt melts containing lanthanides and actinides.
