New borides LnMo{sub 3}B{sub 7} (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) with the YMo{sub 3}B{sub 7} structure
- Franko State Univ., Lviv (Ukraine)
In earlier studies, the authors identified a new boride, YMo{sub 3}B{sub 7}, and determined its structure (new structure type) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction: sp.gr. Pnma; a = 1.012(1) nm, b = 0.31013(3) nm, c = 1.2864(1) nm; Z = 4; R = 0.019. According to the equilibrium phase diagrams, the systems Ln-Mo-B (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) contain unidentified compounds close in composition to LnMo{sub 3}B{sub 8}. In the Gd-Mo-B system, no boride of this composition was revealed; the systems Ln-Mo-B (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu) have not yet been studied. In view of the similar stoichiometries of the compounds {approximately}LnMo{sub 3}B{sub 8} and YMo{sub 3}B{sub 7}, it is reasonable to expect that they may be isostructural. The purpose of this work was to determine the crystal structure of these compounds and to verify the existence of isostructural borides in other Ln-Mo-B systems (Ln = Gd, Tm, Lu).
