Distribution of uranium and thorium isotopes in ferromanganese nodules in the Pacific
- St. Petersburg State Univ. (Russian Federation)
Distribution of {sup 238}U, {sup 232}Th, and {sup 230}Th isotopes in specimens of Pacific ferromanganese nodules (FMNs) of various genetic types is studied. Possible influence of diagenetic processes in the bottom sediments on distribution of these radionuclides in ferromanganese nodules is examined. It is presumed that the remobilization of Mn, Ni, and Cu from the sediments including FMNs does not disturb the radial (vertical) distribution of uranium and thorium in the nodules, which is determined by the sedimentary mechanism of the nodule formation. This enabled the use of the ionium method of nuclear geochronology to determine the rate of formation of bottom ferromanganese nodules, irrespective of their genesis.
