Meeting competition with `business geographics`

Journal Article · · Electric Light and Power
OSTI ID:160246
The right map is worth millions of dollars in the new, competitive marketplace facing electric utilities. Principal tools include a pair of related technologies known as automated mapping/facilities management (AM/FM) and geographic information systems (GIS). GIS technology is used to manage spatial information about facilities and their relationship to customers, products or services. GIS also manages the information databases about the facilities represented on the maps. Users can link graphical pictures with descriptive information telling what is being represented (and even how and when). Demographic information can be added to compare customers and facilities with economic conditions, business development activity or household statistics, opening a new window to information analysis.
