With the large amount of distributed energy resources (DER) being added in distribution networks, protection will become a major challenge due to low fault currents and reverse power flows. Present protection schemes that are based on simple over current philosophy will not be adequate. Advanced protection schemes, which can adapt to the changing system configuration is essential. Time-domain based protection that is independent of fault current magnitudes and direction is proposed to enhance the distribution protection.
